JOOL Members
JOOL is an all volunteer collective committed to learning together how to be good guests in Lisjan territory. Living as whole people in diaspora, fully present on this land and deeply rooting in our own ancestral ways and teachings, we are building beloved Jewish community in alignment with this place and Indigenous people.
Membership: Commitments
We ask all members to make three commitments:
Pay Shuumi Land Tax
The Shuumi Land Tax is a voluntary annual contribution that non-Native people who live in Lisjan territory are invited to make to directly support the rematriation work of our solidarity partner, Sogorea Te’ Land Trust. If possible, we encourage you to pay the amount recommended by Sogorea Te’ or at a level that feels meaningful and sustainable for you.
Attend Membership Orientation
Once a year, JOOL hosts a Membership Orientation for a cohort of new members. We go through a deep dive into JOOL’s purpose, values, and work while building community, engaging in political education, ritual and song, and having fun.
Commit to The Scroll
The Scroll is a document that expresses the central parts of JOOL: our Purpose, Goals, Community Agreements and Accountability. During Membership Orientation, we take time to engage with the values and practices articulated in The Scroll.
Membership: Opportunities
Members are empowered to participate in JOOL in many ways, depending on interest and capacity:
Join a Team (e.g. Education, Community)
Hold leadership positions (e.g. member of the Leadership Circle, Team Leader)
Join ad hoc groups (e.g. rapid response, time-limited project)
Vote on proposals made to JOOL members
Propose new projects, programs or actions
Participate in learning and other activities offered to JOOL members
Write for the JOOL blog
